Saving on plant nutrition can end up costing far more than it saves. In ornamental plant production, fertilizer represents only a small share of total production costs. Yet it influences the entire crop cycle. Growth, size, colour, uniformity, vitality, root development, losses and ultimately saleable quality all depend on it. That is why the lowest price per kilogram is rarely the right selection criterion. Why the cheapest fertilizer can be the most expensive Saving a few cents on nutrition has almost no effect on your cost price. But a plant that falls behind in growth, fails to reach the required saleable size, ends up in a lower quality grade, is less vigorous, needs corrective treatments, has to be grown on longer or is lost entirely will cost the grower far more than those savings deliver. The cheapest fertilizer per kilogram is therefore often the most expensive choice per saleable plant. CRF: the price difference per plant is minimal Based on a high quality CRF costing € 1.00 per kg more, applied at 4 kg/m³. Pot volume CRF per plant Additional cost 1 litre 4 grams € 0.004 2 litre 8 grams € 0.008 3 litre 12 grams € 0.012 5 litre 20 grams € 0.020 For a 2 litre plant this comes down to 0.8 cents extra per plant. For a 2 litre plant that is 0.8 cents extra per plant. As soon as the better nutrition helps a few percent more plants become saleable or reach A grade quality, that difference is recovered many times over. The difference is just as small with WSF The same applies to water soluble fertilizers. A typical WSF application is around 10 grams per m² per week, depending on the crop, growth stage and growing system. That equals 0.010 kg per m² per week. Suppose a cheaper WSF costs € 1.50 per kg and a high quality WSF costs € 2.00 per kg. The price difference is € 0.50 per kg. Extra cost per m² per week: 0.010 kg × € 0.50 = € 0.005 Over a 20 week crop cycle: 20 × € 0.005 = € 0.10 per m² On 1,000 m² over 20 weeks: € 100 extra One hundred euros is a very small amount when a better nutrition strategy contributes to more uniform growth, better leaf colour, fewer laggards, improved vitality and a higher percentage of saleable plants.

*Model scenarios based on a combination of reduced losses and a larger share of A grade quality. Actual results depend on the crop, the business and the growing conditions.

Worked example: Prunus 2 litre

A grower produces 10,000 plants, the high quality CRF costs € 1.00 per kg more and the dosage is 8 grams per plant. The additional investment comes to € 80.

Now suppose that, thanks to a better overall growing strategy, losses drop from 5% to 3%, more plants reach the required size and the share of A grade quality rises from 70% to 82%. In this scenario the additional sales value rises to roughly € 1,100 per 10,000 plants, against € 80 in extra fertilizer costs.

The ratio between investment and potential return is therefore very favourable.

Vitality counts just as much

Good nutrition goes beyond centimetres of growth. A well fed crop has the right nutrients available for root development, strong cell and plant structure, leaf colour, recovery after stress, new shoot formation, uniform development and reaching the required saleable quality. A vigorous and uniform crop also needs fewer corrective treatments.

One principle always applies: optimal nutrition is not the same as maximum nutrition. Both deficiencies and over fertilization must be avoided. It comes down to the right formulation, the right dosage, the right longevity and availability at the right moment.

CRF plus WSF: investing in control over the crop

A high quality nutrition strategy combines two elements.

CRF provides a controlled base supply over an extended period.

WSF provides immediate availability and allows precise adjustment based on crop demand, growth stage, season and water quality.

It is the combination that gives the grower control. CRF lays the foundation, WSF makes targeted correction possible. Cutting back on either one often means correcting later, when the plant has already lost growth or quality.

The calculation that matters most

If fertilizer represents only a few percent of your cost price, selecting on price per kilogram is economically unwise. Do not save € 0.01 on nutrition when € 0.10 to € 0.50 in plant value is at stake.

A plant is not sold on the purchase price of the fertilizer used to grow it. It is sold on size, colour, uniformity, vitality, quality and saleability. And that is exactly where nutrition has a major influence.

So do not choose the cheapest fertilizer. Choose the best fertilizer for the crop.

With high quality CRF and WSF from Mivena, growers invest not only in nutrition but in the end result of the crop.

Frequently asked questions

How much more expensive is a high quality CRF per plant? At a price difference of € 1.00 per kg and a dosage of 4 kg/m³, it is around 0.4 cents per litre of pot volume. For a 2 litre plant that is 0.8 cents.

What does a better WSF cost per m²? At an application rate of 10 grams per m² per week and a price difference of € 0.50 per kg, it is half a cent per m² per week, or € 0.10 per m² over a 20 week crop cycle.

Can CRF and WSF be combined? Yes, and in many crops that is the strongest approach. CRF supplies the base nutrition over a longer period, while WSF allows targeted adjustment.

Is more fertilizer always better? No. Over fertilization can be just as damaging as a deficiency. What matters is the right formulation, dosage, longevity and availability at the right moment.

Autumn fertilization for nurseries: How CRF protects plants during winter Autumn fertilization for nurseries is often underestimated. As temperatures fall and plant growth slows, many growers reduce or stop fertilizing. In practice, autumn is not the moment to stop feeding. It is the moment to feed more intelligently. Controlled release fertilization helps plants enter winter in better condition and start spring stronger. Why autumn fertilization matters When substrate temperatures drop below 10 °C, roots absorb fewer nutrients. Traditional fertilizers continue releasing nutrients even when plants cannot use them. This can increase EC, cause salt accumulation or lead to nutrient losses during winter. Efficiency decreases while risks increase. How Horti-Cote Plus helps nurseries Horti-Cote Plus uses a temperature-responsive Durable coating. When temperatures fall, the coating slows down and reduces nutrient release. When temperatures rise again in early spring, the coating reopens and plants receive nutrition at the moment root activity increases. Feeding remains efficient throughout winter. Even distribution and balanced nutrition The compact 2 to 3 millimetre midi granule mixes evenly in substrates. The balanced N, K, Ca and Mg ratio supports root development, strong cell structure and resilience. Young plants enter dormancy in a healthier state and respond faster when spring growth restarts. Practical benefits for nurseries Autumn fertilization for nurseries delivers long-term advantages. EC levels remain safe, nutrient losses are limited, spring growth is more uniform and labour input is reduced. Growers gain better control with fewer risks during the cold season. Conclusion Autumn fertilization for nurseries is not about applying more fertilizer. It is about precise and controlled feeding. With Horti-Cote Plus, nutrients are released only when plants can absorb them, resulting in healthier overwintering and a stronger start in spring. Discover Horti-Cote Plus –>

Understanding Macro-, Meso-, and Micro-Elements for Optimal Plant Health Just like humans need a balanced diet of vitamins, proteins, carbohydrates, and water, plants require their own mix of essential nutrients to thrive. From major nutrients like nitrogen and potassium to supporting elements like magnesium and zinc, each plays a unique and critical role in plant health. And, as with human nutrition, it’s not just about having these nutrients but having them in the right balance for maximum benefit. A well-nourished plant is resilient, vibrant, and capable of withstanding environmental stress while yielding abundantly. Let’s explore why every nutrient – from the macros to the micros – is essential for lush, healthy plant growth and how balanced fertilization can make all the difference. Macronutrients: The Foundation of Plant Growth and Productivity The three primary macronutrients – nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) – are foundational for plant structure and function. Each of these elements contributes uniquely: While macronutrients drive primary growth, meso- and micro-elements play supporting roles that enable efficient nutrient absorption and overall plant resilience. Mesonutrients: Supporting and Balancing Nutrient Uptake Calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and sulfur (S) are the mesonutrients that support macronutrients by balancing plant processes and enhancing nutrient uptake: These mesonutrients, though less prominent, play an essential role in supporting plant health and maximizing the effects of macronutrients. Micronutrients: Precision in Plant Growth Micronutrients, though needed in trace amounts, are crucial for specific plant functions. Notable micronutrients include: In What Proportions do the Elements Occur in the Plant Molybdenum 1 Copper 100 Zinc 300 Manganese 1.000 Iron 2.000 Boron 2.000 Sulfur 30.000 Phosphorus 60.000 Magnesium 80.000 Calcium 125.000 Potassium 250.000 Nitrogen 1.000.000 Achieving Balance: A Holistic Approach to Plant Fertilization According to Liebig’s Law of the Minimum, plant growth is limited by the least available nutrient, while the Law of the Maximum warns of nutrient excesses that can inhibit nutrient uptake and harm plant health. Therefore, a balanced fertilization plan is essential, ensuring that all elements are available in the correct proportions for the crop and growth stage. In essence, plant fertilization goes beyond nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. By including the full spectrum of nutrients, we empower plants to achieve their full potential, enhancing their health, resilience, and productivity in any season.

Just like humans need a balanced diet of vitamins, proteins, carbohydrates, and water, plants require their own mix of essential nutrients to thrive.

Macronutrients: The Foundation of Plant Growth and Productivity

The three primary macronutrients – nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) – are foundational for plant structure and function. Each of these elements contributes uniquely:

Nitrogen (N) supports lush foliage, chlorophyll synthesis, and photosynthesis, contributing to a plant’s vitality and vibrant green color. However, excessive nitrogen can lead to rapid, weak growth, making plants susceptible to disease.

Phosphorus (P) is critical during early growth stages, aiding root development and energy transfer within the plant via ATP. This nutrient is especially valuable in spring when plants establish their root systems.

Potassium (K) fortifies cell walls and regulates water balance, enhancing drought and frost resistance. Potassium is essential for structural integrity, particularly in turfgrass, where it promotes robust root development and disease resistance.

While macronutrients drive primary growth, meso- and micro-elements play supporting roles that enable efficient nutrient absorption and overall plant resilience.

Mesonutrients: Supporting and Balancing Nutrient Uptake

Calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and sulfur (S) are the mesonutrients that support macronutrients by balancing plant processes and enhancing nutrient uptake:

Calcium (Ca) plays a vital role in nutrient absorption and soil pH regulation. It promotes strong cell walls and healthy roots; a calcium deficiency can lead to brittle roots and limited nutrient intake.

Magnesium (Mg), a core component of chlorophyll, supports photosynthesis and nutrient utilization, particularly for nitrogen and phosphorus. Magnesium’s balance with calcium is crucial to avoid nutrient uptake interference.

Sulfur (S) aids in amino acid and protein synthesis, supporting plant growth and disease resistance. Particularly in sandy soils prone to leaching, sulfur is essential to prevent deficiencies that can result in yellowing leaves and stunted growth.

These mesonutrients, though less prominent, play an essential role in supporting plant health and maximizing the effects of macronutrients.

Micronutrients: Precision in Plant Growth

Micronutrients, though needed in trace amounts, are crucial for specific plant functions. Notable micronutrients include:

Iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn), essential for photosynthesis and nitrogen use.

Boron (B) and zinc (Zn), aiding in cell growth, enzyme activation, and sugar transport.

Copper (Cu), supporting chlorophyll production and cell wall strength.

Molybdenum (Mo), though needed in tiny amounts, is essential for nitrogen fixation and enzyme function, particularly for legume crops.

In What Proportions do the Elements Occur in the Plant

Molybdenum

1

Copper

100

Zinc

300

Manganese

1.000

Iron

2.000

Boron

2.000

Sulfur

30.000

Phosphorus

60.000

Magnesium

80.000

Calcium

125.000

Potassium

250.000

Nitrogen

1.000.000

Achieving Balance: A Holistic Approach to Plant Fertilization

According to Liebig’s Law of the Minimum, plant growth is limited by the least available nutrient, while the Law of the Maximum warns of nutrient excesses that can inhibit nutrient uptake and harm plant health.

Strawberry cultivation, particularly in substrates, presents unique challenges that demand precision and efficiency. As a leading innovator in fertilizer technologies, Mivena has developed a cutting-edge solution to these challenges through topdressing—a revolutionary approach to applying slow-release fertilizers. This method not only boosts crop health but also enhances environmental sustainability by reducing nutrient leaching and promoting more efficient use of resources. In this blog, we’ll explore the benefits of topdressing in strawberry cultivation, how it works, and why it’s the future of sustainable farming. 1. The Challenges of Strawberry Tray Plants Strawberry tray plants, often grown in substrates, have a unique nutrient curve that contrasts with many other crops. According to Mivena’s technical expert Stefan Hoefnagel, the challenge lies in the nutrient demand of the plant during different growth stages. Initially, the plants need minimal feeding to encourage root development and flower bud initiation. However, as the season progresses, they require a nutrient boost to support fruit development. “During the early stages, we give low levels of nitrogen, around 5 N-units per week, but from September onward, this can increase to 25 to 40 N-units per week,” explains Stefan. Traditional water-soluble fertilizers, commonly used by growers, often result in wastage and inefficient application. Up to 50% of these nutrients miss their target and run off during irrigation, causing both financial losses for growers and environmental harm due to nutrient leaching. In some cases, plants also suffer from over-watering when growers need to supply additional nutrition, even though their substrates are already wet. 2. What is Topdressing and How Does it Work? To address the challenges of traditional fertilizers, Mivena has introduced topdressing as an innovative solution in strawberry cultivation. Topdressing involves applying slow-release coated fertilizers directly onto the surface of strawberry trays. These fertilizers gradually release nutrients, perfectly timed with the plant’s needs, ensuring minimal wastage and maximum efficiency. By using topdressing, growers gain better control over nutrient supply, eliminating the need for over-irrigation and reducing nutrient losses through leaching. Stefan explains, “With topdressing, fewer nutrients end up outside the trays, and we minimize the risk of nutrient runoff caused by excessive irrigation. This leads to more efficient fertilization and a lower environmental footprint.” 3. Proven Results of Topdressing: Boosting Yields and Sustainability The effectiveness of topdressing has been demonstrated through various independent trials. A study conducted at Proefcentrum Hoogstraten in Belgium, focusing on the June-bearing variety ‘Sonsation’, produced remarkable results. Strawberry plants that were topdressed with Mivena’s Horti-Cote® Plus CRF after September exhibited stronger growth, with up to 300 grams more fruit per plant compared to those treated with traditional water-soluble fertilizers. Similarly, another trial by Delphy on the everbearing variety ‘Favori’ showed significant improvements in plant health and yields when topdressing was used. The precise delivery of nutrients helped plants grow more robustly, without the complications of over-irrigation. In addition to improving yields, Mivena’s Horti-Cote® Plus CRF fertilizers are coated with a biodegradable, sustainable coating known as Durable CRF. This eco-friendly coating ensures no harmful chemicals remain in the environment, aligning with upcoming European Union regulations that will ban non-biodegradable coated fertilizers by 2026. For growers, this means being prepared for future regulatory changes while maintaining high productivity and crop health. 4. Flexibility and Control with Slow-Release Fertilizers One of the key advantages of topdressing is the flexibility it offers in nutrient management. Since the fertilizer releases nutrients slowly over time, growers can adjust the amount of nutrition based on current conditions, such as temperature and rainfall. This eliminates the need for frequent nutrient applications and reduces reliance on water-soluble fertilizers. Furthermore, topdressing in September extends the feeding period for strawberry plants without the risk of overwatering or high EC levels in the substrate. This efficient approach simplifies crop management, lowers labor costs, and ensures plants receive nutrients when they need them most. 5. Environmental and Economic Benefits of Topdressing Beyond yield improvements, topdressing offers significant environmental benefits. By reducing nutrient leaching and decreasing the need for excessive irrigation, growers can lower their environmental impact. The biodegradable Durable CRF coating also ensures that no synthetic residues are left behind in the soil, contributing to a more sustainable agricultural ecosystem. From an economic standpoint, topdressing may seem more expensive per kilogram than traditional fertilizers, but the efficiency it offers makes up for the initial cost. Growers require less fertilizer overall and experience higher yields and healthier plants, leading to better returns on investment. 6. The Future of Strawberry Farming with Topdressing As the agricultural industry faces increasing pressure to produce more food with fewer resources, innovative solutions like topdressing will be key to sustainable farming. The proven success of Mivena’s topdressing products allows growers to adopt more efficient, environmentally friendly, and productive farming practices. Topdressing with slow-release fertilizers is a significant step toward more sustainable agriculture. The technique’s benefits extend beyond strawberry cultivation to other crops, providing farmers worldwide with an opportunity to reduce their environmental impact while meeting growing food demands. Conclusion Topdressing represents a breakthrough in the way strawberry growers manage nutrient application. It overcomes the inefficiencies of traditional water-soluble fertilizers, offering a more precise, environmentally friendly, and effective solution. With proven results, including higher yields, reduced nutrient leaching, and a smaller environmental footprint, topdressing is set to become a standard practice for growers looking to optimize their farming processes. At Mivena, we are committed to supporting farmers with innovative solutions that help them achieve their production goals while maintaining a focus on sustainability.

Autumn is a crucial period for container nurseries. While most plants prepare for winter dormancy, it’s essential to apply fertilizers strategically. A well-executed autumn fertilization provides a foundation for a strong start to the growing season and healthy winter development. In this blog, we will discuss why and how autumn fertilization is essential, with a focus on Mivena’s products like Horticote High K and Horticote Standard, tailored to the specific needs of nurseries. The Importance of Root Development in Autumn During autumn, the plant’s energy shifts from above-ground growth to root development. This phase is critical as the roots not only anchor the plant but also act as channels for water and nutrient transport. Strong roots are essential for surviving harsh conditions such as frost and drought. In container cultivation, where plants grow in limited substrate, root development is even more vital. With restricted space, growers must ensure optimal nutrient utilization. Fertilizers like Horticote High K, which is high in potassium, not only promote root development but also enhance the plant’s winter hardiness, reducing the risk of over-fertilization and root stress. Climate Change and Flexibility in Fertilization With climate change leading to longer and warmer autumn periods, plants remain active for extended periods, altering their nutrient needs. Where October once marked the end of the growing season, this can now stretch into November or even later, requiring more flexibility in fertilization practices. Horticote Standard, a controlled-release fertilizer, provides the perfect solution. This fertilizer supplies plants with the right amount of nutrients over a longer period, ensuring neither over- nor underfeeding. It helps growers efficiently manage changing weather conditions, such as rainfall that can leach nutrients from containers.

Optimizing Fertilization for Strawberry Tray Plants As the market for strawberry tray plants continues to expand, the cultivation methods are becoming increasingly specialized. At Mivena, we recognize that achieving a resilient and high-yield crop requires a strategic approach to fertilization—one that’s tailored to the specific needs of each plant variety and growing condition. The following insights highlight how our controlled-release and water-soluble fertilizers can enhance efficiency, optimize growth, and ensure a healthy crop. Understanding the Challenges in Strawberry Tray Plant Cultivation The cultivation of strawberry tray plants is faced with several evolving challenges: 1.New Varieties with Unique Needs: Emerging strawberry varieties each bring specific characteristics and nutritional demands. 2.Market Demands for Specific Plant Types: The industry’s move towards specialized strawberry types requires precision in cultivation practices. 3.Efficient Fertilization on Recirculation Fields: As recirculation systems become more common, minimizing waste and maximizing nutrient uptake are paramount. 4.Chemical-Free Crop Protection: A well-balanced fertilization strategy is crucial for promoting natural plant defenses, reducing the need for chemical interventions. Horti-Cote Plus CRF: Your Go-To Fertilizer For over 12 years, our research in strawberry tray plant fertilization, conducted at the Trial Centre PC Hoogstraten and Delphy, has shown that Horti-Cote Plus CRF is the ideal solution for achieving consistent growth. This controlled-release fertilizer (CRF) is designed with a stable release curve that doesn’t overreact to temperature fluctuations, making it safer and more reliable than many other products on the market. The Dangers of Root Burn and the Importance of Timing High electrical conductivity (EC) levels caused by inappropriate fertilizer use can lead to root burn, which disrupts nutrient uptake and opens the door for pathogens. To mitigate this, we recommend using Horti-Cote Plus CRF mixed into the substrate for baseline nutrition, paired with Granusol WSF (a water-soluble fertilizer) applied via irrigation systems or sprayers. This approach ensures a balanced nutrient release that matches the plant’s growth stages. Recommended Fertilization Strategy: – CRF-WSF Ratio: Apply 70-90 kg N/ha with Horti-Cote Plus CRF 6M and 120-150 kg N/ha using Granusol WSF schedules. – Timing is key: Different strawberry varieties benefit from varying nutrient schedules. For example, ‘Sonsation’ benefits from early fertilization on the tray field, while ‘Malling Centenary’ requires a distinct approach for heavier plants. Addressing Sodium and Chlorine Sensitivity Strawberries are highly sensitive to salts like sodium and chlorine, which can accumulate in recirculated water. To counteract this, we use Granusol WSF, a pure crystalline fertilizer that contains no undesirable salts. Adjusting the fertigation schedule to manage antagonistic interactions is essential for maintaining optimal growth conditions. Avoiding Unpredictable Fertilizer Releases With doses of basic fertilizer ranging from 3-6 kg per cubic meter, understanding the release curve of each product is crucial. Especially at the start of cultivation, high temperatures can cause an excessive release of nutrients, negatively impacting the young plants. Proper management of nutrient release is essential for avoiding spikes in nitrate levels, which can harm plant development. Perfecting the N-Ammonium to N-Nitrate Ratio Achieving the right balance between ammonium and nitrate nitrogen is vital for healthy strawberry tray plants. Pre-compounded fertilizers like Granusol WSF ensure a consistent ratio of nitrogen, cations, and trace elements. Depending on the variety and growth stage, increasing ammonium nitrogen at the appropriate time can significantly boost growth. Starting Strong with Granusol WSF A strong start is critical for successful tray plant cultivation. Our Granusol WSF 10+52+10+MgO+TE+MV10 offers the best assurance for maximum growth by providing readily absorbable phosphates that are always available to new root tips. Insights from Recent Trials Recent trials have further validated our fertilization strategies: – Sonsation Trials: The trial at PC Hoogstraten showed optimized growth and fruit production with top-dressing using Horti-Cote Plus 2M. – Favori Trials: Conducted at Delphy Berry Plaza, this three-year trial on everbearing strawberries tested various nutritional levels, demonstrating significant improvements in fruit production and quality. – Elsanta Trials: A five-year study confirmed the benefits of using Horti-Cote Plus CRF with trace elements, showing substantial gains in both yield and plant health. Conclusion In strawberry cultivation, precision is everything. By carefully balancing nutrient delivery, we not only improve plant health but also minimize waste and reduce the need for chemical interventions. At Mivena, we are committed to providing innovative solutions that meet the evolving needs of the strawberry industry, ensuring that every crop is as healthy and productive as possible.

In 2019 Delphy started a planting-hole application trial in Viburnum Tinus at Tree nursery Marcel Michels located in Hilvarenbeek. Delphy is a leading internationally operating organization for research and advice in the tree nursery sector. Planting-hole applications with controlled release fertilizers are increasingly used in ornamental tree nurseries. Partly caused by simple application through mechanization. (planting hole machinery on GPS). Increasing number of tree nurseries have invested in mechanization to reduce labour costs. Positive experiences in plant quality are just as decisive for the success of this application. Controlled release of nutrition direct in the rootzone is the reason for this success. Trial setup:In this trial a distinction is made between controlled released fertilizers and soil stimulants & substrates. In the trial setup of 2019-2020 these objects have been tested separately from each other. In this report we will focus exclusively on the results of the controlled released fertilizers as planting-hole fertilizer and a non-planting-hole application with mineral-organic fertilizers Object D. 2018Year before trial is planted50 tons cattle farmyard manureCrop: Tagetes 2019On April 17th P9 young plants “Viburnum tinus” planted in planting holes with a 15 cm diameter. All objects scored well on rooting, except for Object H. (> 10% failure of plants and lesser quality rooting.) With planting hole application, you can clearly fertilize more efficiently. In 2021, Delphy will set up another planting-hole fertilizer application trail at Marcel Michels. This time with Prunus young plantings P9. Hopefully we will meet during the delphy demo days this year to see the results of this interesting way of fertilization. We grow SMART!

Trial setup:
In this trial a distinction is made between controlled released fertilizers and soil stimulants & substrates. In the trial setup of 2019-2020 these objects have been tested separately from each other.

In this report we will focus exclusively on the results of the controlled released fertilizers as planting-hole fertilizer and a non-planting-hole application with mineral-organic fertilizers Object D.

Conclusions
This fertilizer trial shows us that we can achieve better results with 50% less N when we use plant-hole application method with Field-Cote CRF SMART 14+5+11+2MgO+TE 24M
In 2 of the 3 controlled release fertilizer plant hole applications, the results are better than standard application (not in the plant-hole) with mineral-organic (Object D) two times per year.

All objects scored well on rooting, except for Object H. (> 10% failure of plants and lesser quality rooting.)

With planting hole application, you can clearly fertilize more efficiently.

In 2021, Delphy will set up another planting-hole fertilizer application trail at Marcel Michels. This time with Prunus young plantings P9.

Hopefully we will meet during the delphy demo days this year to see the results of this interesting way of fertilization.

Mivena makes different polymer coated fertilizers for use in nurseries. We make different types of product, depending on the application. For mixing in substrate we make Horticote Plus CRF with longevities between 2-16 Months. For topdressing we make Horticote Top-dress CRF with longevities between 4-12 Months. Finally Arbocote is a very versatile product for larger pot-sizes with longevities between 6-12 Months. Horticote Plus CRF consists of 100% coated NPK granules. Each granule has the same NPK + Trace elements inside and the size is between 2-4mm. The top-quality coating ensures an optimal release pattern which can be used on almost any crop grown in a pot. The fertilizer can either be mixed in the substrate or placed in the centre of the pot by dibbling. Since it is 100% coated, it is safe for young plants. This product has been tested and used from North-European climate to hot climates like North-Africa and the Middle-East without any problems. We make two different formulations of this product: a standard with high N and a version with high K for flowering plants. Horticote Top-dress CRF is a mixture of Horticote Plus and a non-coated starter element. As the name suggests, it should be used for topdressing pots or containers. The starter element in the fertilizer will be available for the plant directly where the coated elements will be available over a longer period. It is perfect to use in plants that will not be repotted but need an extra nutrient boost for up to 8 Months. It can also be used as the base fertilizer in nurseries that do not have the possibility to give extra fertilizer in the irrigation water. This range of products is also available in a standard high N formulation as well as a high K variety. Finally we have also made Arbocote CRF, which consists of a polymer coated part as well as an uncoated part. Furthermore it consists of a high portion of Magnesium which makes it very useful for larger plants. Arbocote can be mixed in the substrate for plants in pots that are larger than 10L. It can also be used as a topdressing product.
