Customer Story | Municipality of Heusden

“Consistent growth without peaks”

From public green to sports turf management
For nearly forty years, Lion van Logten has been working in public green maintenance. He started as a park worker and gradually grew into his current role as sports field coordinator for the municipality of Heusden.
Today, he oversees more than 45 football pitches, plus several hockey, handball, and athletics facilities.

“We do almost everything ourselves, except major renovations.
I always say: I’d rather mow once more than have to sweep — it saves both time and money.”

Consistent growth with controlled release

Six years ago, Heusden switched to Mivena Controlled-Release Fertilizers (CRF), supplied by Vitagro.
Since then, the turf growth has become smoother and more predictable. While previous fertilizers caused visible peaks and dips, the CRF program ensures even, steady development throughout the season.

“With Mivena, the grass grows much more evenly.
It’s ten times better — maybe even fourteen.”

Mivena’s temperature-responsive coating follows the soil temperature. Nutrients are released only when the grass is actively growing, minimizing losses and keeping growth consistent — even through changing weather.

Smart seeding: strong base, fast recovery

During renovations, Heusden deliberately uses a two-step seeding program.
First, Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis) is sown to form a strong, horizontal root base. After about five cuts, perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) is added to provide quick establishment, vibrant color, and recovery after wear.

“Bluegrass holds the turf together; ryegrass fills up quickly and looks sharp.”

A proper starter fertilizer helps the turf close faster, minimizing weed pressure.
The result is a dense, resilient playing surface that stays strong even under heavy use.

“Deep, lateral rooting from bluegrass builds the load-bearing ‘foundation’; ryegrass finishes the surface for quick recovery and colour.”

This root structure explains why goal areas stay intact longer and recover faster. The stable lower layer spreads load, while the upper layer regrows quickly.

Heusden fertilization program (2023)

Each sports park is soil-tested and calculated individually.
Most fields receive four main applications per year, adapted to season and use intensity:

Additional field practice:
Coated seeds with a nutrient layer are used on renovated pitches. Because the bluegrass is sown on top of the surface and then lightly incorporated with a Cambridge roller, this ensures excellent soil contact and a uniform start of growth. Where necessary, nitrogen is occasionally supplemented through liquid applications.

Practical efficiency on the field

The municipality keeps the program compact and manageable.
Four applications per year are sufficient for most pitches.
Using 500 kg big bags makes logistics safe and light.
At two clubs, GPS-guided mowing robots create fixed driving lines, allowing more precise fertilizer spreading.

The results speak for themselves:
✅ No more growth peaks
✅ Less sweeping
✅ Fewer weeds
✅ Longer-lasting goal areas

“Because the release is steady, the growth stays balanced.
The turf stays stronger, denser, and looks better all year.”

Conclusion

What started as a search for less fluctuation and more control has become a proven system for consistent turf quality.
Heusden demonstrates that the right mix of controlled-release feeding, smart grass composition, and practical planning can truly make the difference.

Consistent growth — without peaks.
